Grounded in Hawaiian values. Built on experiential healing.
Pearl Haven is a specialized residential treatment program that delivers uniquely tailored and innovative programming to youth who have experienced significant traumas in their lives. At Pearl Haven, we believe that healing is not something a child does on their own, but that it takes a community surrounding that child with aloha (love and compassion). The community comes together to nurture and connect our youth with supportive, prosocial resources that bolster growth, inspire progress, and empower the youth towards ola (health and wellbeing).
Our mission
Ho'ōla Nā Pua, meaning "New Life for Our Children," was founded to shine light onto the challenges facing Hawaii's most vulnerable youth, placing the health of Hawai'i's children at the center of our mission. Pearl Haven was built to fill a critical gap: a residential treatment program designed specifically for youth experiencing complex trauma, delivered with cultural rootedness and clinical precision.
Just as sand is transformed into a pearl through layers of consistency, structure, safe nurturing relationships, and corrective experiences; so too are the young people in our care.

Rooted in culture
Hawaiian values are not a supplement to our clinical model; they are foundational to it. The concepts of mālama, lōkahi, and aloha provide a living framework that guides how our team cares for youth, structures the therapeutic milieu, and approaches healing. For many youth in our program, connecting to the land, language, and culture of Hawai'i is itself a profound therapeutic experience.
Every aspect of Pearl Haven's milieu is built around the practice of mālama: caring for the whole person, the community, and the environment. Youth learn to give and receive genuine care as a foundational part of their healing journey.
Our therapeutic model prioritizes lōkahi: the balance between individual healing and community belonging. Group treatment, shared experiential activities, and peer connection are not supplementary to our model; they are central to it.
Aloha is more than a greeting; it is a way of showing up. At Pearl Haven, it shapes how staff engage with youth, how treatment goals are set, and how our entire team holds unwavering belief in every young person's capacity for a meaningful future.
Why our methods work
Our clinical team uses a combination of the most rigorously studied therapies for complex PTSD and serious emotional disturbances, adapted specifically for adolescents and delivered by licensed specialists.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy helps youth safely process traumatic memories by reducing their emotional charge and building new neural pathways toward resilience.
Non-invasive therapy that trains the brain to self-regulate through real-time feedback. Neurofeedback directly addresses the dysregulated nervous system at the root of complex trauma presentations.
Four core domains (emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness) taught in individual and group settings to build lasting, practical life skills.
Daily individual and group therapy delivered by licensed therapists. Regular structured sessions give youth space to process their experiences, build connection, and develop lasting coping skills.
Healing doesn't happen in isolation. Structured family therapy sessions, caregiver coaching, and comprehensive reintegration planning strengthen the whole family system alongside the resident.
A full academic program embedded within the therapeutic environment. Diploma-track credits, individualized academic plans, and specialized educators who understand trauma-informed learning.
Proven outcomes
Our outcomes are tracked and published annually through the Youth Experience Survey (Y.E.S.) Report, presented by Dr. Dominique Roe-Sepowitz of ASU's Office of Sex Trafficking Intervention Research, one of the most rigorous evaluations of a residential treatment program in the country.
